Dr. Matthew Schum: Curating at Large

PRESENTED BY THE SORAYA SARAH NAZARIAN PROGRAM IN THE FINE ARTS, THE THIRD LECTURE OF THE SERIES CONTINUES TO FOCUS ON ISSUES RELATING TO CONTEMPORARY ART, CENTERING ON LOS ANGELES AND, MORE BROADLY, THE WEST COAST.

Los Angeles writer Matthew Schum (PhD, UCSD) will discuss curating beyond institutional confines including Desert X 2019.

Matthew Schum (PhD) is a writer and a curator based in Los Angeles. He is currently a lecturer in the Art Department at Cal State Long Beach and has taught art history at the University of California San Diego, the Willem de Kooning Academy, Otis College of Art, NYU Steinhardt, and Cal State Bakersfield. Institutional exhibition work includes MoMA, the Walker Art Center and the Vancouver Art Gallery. From 2012 to 2015 he served as Curator at LAXART. Curatorial residencies include SALT, Istanbul, Cura, Bodrum, and Forest Island, Mammoth Lakes. He has edited several artist catalogs, including a monograph for filmmaker-artist Mark Boulos (2017, Hatje Cantz), and written on contemporary art for ApertureArtforumFlash ArtMousse,Witte de With Review and X-TRA.
