A group of pictures tied together by a subject or theme can tell a fuller and more dimensional story than a single photograph. Learn how to develop a cohesive photo essay that contains a strong visual narrative. Topics include: choosing an idea, creating meaningful images, writing an artist statement, selecting and sequencing images that work together, and presenting a finished photo project effectively as a book, or wall display. Any camera may be used for the class.

Instructor: Nancy Kaye

A photographer and photo educator in Los Angeles. Her photos have been widely exhibited in juried shows and published in numerous books, magazines, and newspapers, including The Washington Post and The New York Times. Her portrait of author Ralph Ellison is in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. In 1988 she photographed a group of young girls in a rough Brooklyn neighborhood for the Times; a generation later she collaborated on a project, “Jump Rope Girls,” documenting the girls’ lives as adults with children of their own, and presented it at Duke University’s Documentary Study Center. She has been teaching and leading photo workshops for more than 15 years and serves on the board of the L.A. chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers. nancykayephotography.com
